West Asheville & Sulphur Springs Electric Railway

Edwin Carrier's electric railway helped drive growth into West Asheville during the 1890s through the 1930s.  It ran passengers and tourists across the French Broad River improving the connection to downtown.  The monuments continue from Haywood Road past the West Asheville end of the line sign across from the Mothlight.

Gus Cutty Mural

I've been noticing Gus Cutty's work all over West Asheville.  This fox & bridge mural is at the Haywood Country Club in West Asheville.  Not a great photograph of the painting but I enjoy his work.  Happy to learn he has studio pieces as well.  Take a look here to see additional examples. http://www.guscutty.com/

McCormick Field

Lucky to have a package of game tickets for the Asheville Tourist this year.  I always enjoy watching minor league baseball games and this is another reason to get out of the house and spend time with friends.

Stay Weird Silo

2019-06-09T15:51:29+00:00

Formerly the Good Vibes Silo, a quick change in February altered the slogan to the Stay Weird.  Hadn't been by to photograph the River Arts District landmark lately but had a chance after another visit to Henrietta's.   I modified this image slightly, removing another concrete block that disturbed the composition.

First Baptist Church of Asheville

2019-05-17T14:40:44+00:00

The First Baptist Church of Asheville is a historic church designed by Douglas Ellington and built between 1925-1927.  Ellington also designed Asheville's City Hall and quite a few other Art Deco buildings throughout the area.  If you would like additional information about the church it can be found here: www.FBCA.net

Chestnut Cove Overlook-Milepost 398.3

2020-01-02T15:37:13+00:00

Chestnut Cove Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I've photographed this location a few times as its one of the first overlooks heading south from Asheville.  Really liked the infrared effect on the foliage in the front but with the dapple light from the clouds it may be a little "busy" as a composition.  Will try it again soon.

Play Everyday Mural

2019-05-16T14:05:10+00:00

The Play Everyday Mural was inspired by a 1970s advertisement and created over an afternoon by Peter Parpan and Hannah Dansie.  There's more to the story but why re-tell it when its done well here on the Short Street Cakes website which is adjacent to the mural.

Bald Cypress Tree and Knees

2019-09-10T21:32:52+00:00

This bald cypress tree is in the azalea garden at the Biltmore Estate.  The diversity of the forest on the property is impressive.  In a short distance you can come across a redwood, bald cypress, cedar, magnolia, and persian parrotia.  That's just the start of the list.
