Stop #6 on the Asheville Urban Trail honors Elizabeth Blackwell for her contributions to medicine. An Asheville resident, Blackwell was the first female in the country to earn a medical degree. She also went on to found the world’s first 4-year medical college for women and created the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1857.
